Eosinophilic Esophagitis
This page covers the allergy side of eosinophilic esophagitis evaluation and management — Asthma & Allergy Care, P.C. sees both adults and children across our New Jersey offices.
What Eosinophilic Esophagitis Is
Eosinophilic esophagitis is a condition in which a type of white blood cell, called an eosinophil, builds up in the food pipe. This buildup causes inflammation, which is often linked to allergy.
The condition is often shortened to EoE. It can affect the way the food pipe works and how it feels to eat.
Asthma & Allergy Care, P.C. works with adults and children who have EoE, focusing on the allergic triggers that may be involved.
Symptoms to Watch For
These are common signs of eosinophilic esophagitis. If any of these sound familiar, it may be time to talk with us.
Difficulty swallowing
Food feeling as though it sticks on the way down
Chest or upper stomach pain
Heartburn that does not settle with usual measures
In children, feeding difficulties or poor weight gain
Vomiting or regurgitation
How It Is Diagnosed
The diagnosis of eosinophilic esophagitis is made by a gastroenterologist. Our part is to look for the allergic triggers that may be behind it. We use these methods:
A Full History
We start by talking with you about your symptoms, how often they occur, and how they affect eating and daily life.
A Physical Examination
A hands-on exam helps us understand your overall health and look for signs of related allergic conditions.
Allergy Skin Testing, Where Relevant
Skin testing can help identify food or environmental allergens that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Blood Testing, Where Appropriate
In some cases, blood testing can help us understand which allergens may be involved.
