Chronic Cough
A cough that lasts longer than 8 weeks in adults, or longer than 4 weeks in children, is evaluated and treated at Asthma & Allergy Care, P.C. across our New Jersey offices.
What It Is
A chronic cough is a cough that lasts longer than 8 weeks in adults, or longer than 4 weeks in children.
Common Causes an Allergist Looks For
More than one cause is often present at once.
Cough-variant asthma (asthma where cough is the main symptom)
Post-nasal drip from allergic rhinitis or sinusitis
Acid reflux
Blood-pressure medicines called ACE inhibitors
Non-asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis
How We Evaluate It
Evaluation begins with a detailed history, including your medications and triggers, followed by a physical examination.
We use lung function testing (spirometry) and allergy testing as part of the evaluation, and when needed, we refer for a chest x-ray or other tests.
How It's Treated
Treatment means treating the underlying cause, for example:
Asthma Medicines
When cough-variant asthma is the cause, asthma medicines are used to treat it.
Treatment of Nasal Allergies or Sinusitis
When post-nasal drip from allergic rhinitis or sinusitis is the cause, we treat that underlying condition.
Managing Reflux
When acid reflux is contributing to the cough, we help manage it.
Changing a Medication
When a medication such as an ACE inhibitor is the cause, we work with your other doctors to change it.
